On September 20, 2024, 36-year-old Tasha Smith was killed in the parking lot of the Tropical Manor apartment complex in Merritt Island, Florida, after a fight between two men turned into gunfire. Smith was not involved in the altercation but was struck in the ensuing exchange and later died at a hospital. Deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office arrived about 12:20 a.m. after reports of a loud disturbance.
Investigators identified 26-year-old Prince Alonzo Johnson of Rockledge as the person accused of firing the shots. Johnson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and is being held at the Brevard County Jail on no-bond status. Smith is described as a cherished daughter, sister and family member; her parents are Linda Deibel and Michael and Lindy Smith, and she had several step-siblings and a nephew.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Agent Vince Bustillo in the Homicide Unit or CRIMELINE; anonymous tips and rewards may be available. Did anyone in Merritt Island see or hear what happened that night?
