Koty Stewart, 34, of Jacksonville, Florida, was shot in the head and killed on May 25, 2024, at Ginnie Springs, a privately owned park in Gilchrist County. The shooting followed an argument over a parking spot between two groups during the crowded Memorial Day weekend; the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office says the dispute initially appeared resolved but about an hour later Stewart was found shot near the Beaver’s Landing bathhouse and did not survive.
Two brothers from St. Marys, Georgia, Fisher and Dallas Watts, have been charged in connection with Stewart’s shooting. The weekend saw a second fatal shooting at Ginnie Springs that night, when 26-year-old Marco Mandujano was killed after someone fired into a crowd; three others were wounded and no arrests had been announced in that incident.
Stewart’s family has filed a negligence lawsuit against Ginnie Springs Outdoors, alleging the park failed to enforce rules on drinking, weapons, and drugs and pointing to prior dangerous incidents and heavy police calls during past holiday weekends. Park management has since announced a six-point safety plan including capacity limits, more staffing and law enforcement coordination, third-party security review, and increased visibility of rules.
Does anyone who attended Ginnie Springs that weekend or who has information about the events near Beaver’s Landing around May 25 have details that could help clarify the timeline?
