Porchia Crossley was 32 and from Winter Haven, Florida. Known to friends as Peezy P, she worked as a mixer operator at a Publix bakery. On the morning of October 11, 2023, Crossley drove to a home on Century Boulevard in Auburndale to confront 21-year-old Kyle Herrington about a disagreement reportedly over marijuana. The two exchanged words outside the residence, and as Crossley turned and began walking back toward her vehicle, Herrington followed and shot her from behind.

Crossley suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene; officers arrived around 8:45 a.m. Herrington was still at the scene and on the phone with 9-1-1 when officers contacted him. He identified himself as the shooter and claimed Crossley had attacked him, saying he acted in self-defense under Stand Your Ground. Investigators later located video that reportedly showed Crossley walking away when Herrington followed and fired about three to four shots.
