On September 24, 2023, 25-year-old Matthew Swiger was fatally shot outside Oku Restaurant on First Street North near the Jacksonville Beach Pier in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Police responded around 9:10 p.m. after reports of a person shot and found Swiger on the sidewalk bleeding from his head and other parts of his body; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple witnesses identified 28-year-old acquaintance Akiyah D. Price as the shooter. Witnesses described a physical altercation between Swiger and Price on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant; Price, wearing a red-hooded sweatshirt, followed Swiger across the street toward Fourth Avenue North and witnesses heard several gunshots. One witness who knew Price said they saw her pull out a gun and shoot Swiger multiple times. Investigators recovered six shell casings at the scene and later recovered a spent shell casing outside Price’s front door that matched the caliber of those casings.

Price was arrested at her home and charged with murder; she pleaded not guilty and was denied bond at her initial appearance. She had a prior misdemeanor battery plea in June and was working at V’s Pizza near the shooting site at the time of the incident.
