Dayanna Hurtado, 24 and originally from Peru, was shot and killed on August 15, 2023, at the MAA Coral Springs apartment complex in Coral Springs, Florida. Coral Springs police found her on a second-floor balcony in the 9200 block of Ramblewood Drive just before 8:30 p.m.; she had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect identified in the case is 21-year-old Chase Harder, described as Hurtado’s boyfriend and a Fort Lauderdale Police detention officer who previously served as a U.S. Army Reserve military police officer. A witness heard a gunshot and a child screaming, then three more shots, and saw a man carrying a child and leaving in a white Mercedes-Benz SUV. Hurtado’s 3-year-old daughter, who witnessed the shooting, was later taken to the child’s biological father and was reported confused and traumatized.

Harder reportedly dropped the child at the father’s home after riding with Hurtado, called 911 to turn himself in and confessed to the shooting. He was arrested by Coral Springs Police and charged with premeditated murder and written threats to kill or do bodily injury; he was held without bond. Hurtado had previously reported threats from Harder to police on July 30. Relatives set up a GoFundMe to help the daughter and family.

Anyone who knew Dayanna, her routines, or who may have information about the shooting is asked to come forward.
