Antonio J. Smith, 33, was fatally shot in his Pahokee apartment on July 20, 2023. An armed man identified as 23-year-old Antrone McCants knocked at the door of the West Third Street unit, demanded money from Smith and a female companion, and forced his way inside after they told him to leave. McCants, described as wearing red shorts, a black and grey jacket, and no shoes, shot Smith in the back bedroom; Smith was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital by Trauma Hawk and died about two hours later.

The woman fought back, striking McCants with a candle holder; McCants then aimed his gun at her and pulled the trigger twice but the weapon did not fire. The woman, who had prior verbal disputes with McCants and knew his family lived across the street, gave information that helped investigators. McCants was arrested by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office after family members located him and was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and armed burglary. Anyone with information about the shooting or the people involved is asked to come forward.
