A Homecoming celebration at Albany State University ended in gunfire on October 19, 2024, when 19-year-old De-Morion Tayshawn Daniels of Newnan, Georgia, was shot and killed near a campus concert around 8:50 p.m. The area was crowded when the shooting occurred. Five other people were injured: a 13-year-old girl, a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl, all local high school students who sustained gunshot wounds; a 20-year-old woman who was grazed by a bullet; and a 19-year-old woman who was hurt while fleeing the scene.
First responders set up a triage site on campus before moving victims to a local hospital, and the university was placed on lockdown as investigators searched for suspects. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation led the inquiry, and an 18-year-old, Jeremy Marshall of Albany, Georgia, was arrested and initially charged in November 2024 with three counts of Aggravated Assault and three counts of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony. By December 9, 2024, while in custody, Marshall faced additional warrants including Murder, Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony; an indictment later accused him of Malice Murder and alleged involvement with a criminal street gang known as the Blockos or 4BG.
