On the morning of October 5, 2024, 37-year-old Naun Mendez Meléndez, a Hispanic man, was killed during a street confrontation in Fort Valley, Georgia. According to reports, Melendez had knocked on a home on the 400 block of Boulevard Street seeking to buy marijuana; after being told none was available, he became agitated and began throwing beer cans at the residence. An 18-year-old, Jaqwan Johnson, came out of the house to confront Melendez. The encounter escalated when Johnson struck Melendez in the head with a firearm and Melendez produced a knife from his shorts. Johnson then fired a single shot that struck Melendez in the chest. Officers arrived around 3:23 a.m. and found Melendez lying face down; he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Peach County Coroner.
The Fort Valley Police Department, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, opened a homicide investigation and identified a person of interest. That person, Jaqwan Johnson, was taken into custody; later court filings refer to the victim also as Anahury Melendez. What details about the confrontation or its lead-up would help clarify why it turned deadly?
