On the night of September 22, 2024, 27-year-old Namarri Shackleford of Carrollton was shot at Mableton Ridge Apartments on Mableton Parkway in Mableton. First responders found her with a gunshot wound around 9 p.m.; she was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased.

The Cobb County Police Department Major Crimes Unit identified and arrested 26-year-old David Wells of Atlanta, a man known to Shackleford. The incident has been classified as domestic violence. Arrest paperwork alleges the shooting occurred in the presence of children and says Wells tried to conceal the crime by using linens and cleaning products to remove blood, placing bloody items in garbage bags and discarding some in an apartment-complex dumpster. Charges listed include felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, and three counts of third-degree cruelty to children.

Wells has prior convictions that legally barred him from possessing a firearm, including guilty pleas for terroristic threats in June 2023 and carrying a weapon on school grounds in November 2017. He was booked into the Cobb County jail without bond. A Celebration of Life service for Shackleford was held on October 2, 2024.
