A dispute at the Porterdale Bar and Grill on Broad Street turned deadly on the evening of July 27, 2024. Kyle Fowler, a 68-year-old White man from nearby Covington, was shot sometime between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Emergency medical personnel treated him at the scene and he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Porterdale Police Department and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office opened an immediate investigation and quickly identified a suspect. Authorities arrested 34-year-old William Brown of McDonough and charged him with murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Investigators asked anyone who witnessed the shooting to contact the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
