Tommy Lee Jones, 69, was killed at his Leesburg, Georgia home on July 4, 2024. Deputies responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired about 3:00 a.m. and reportedly heard more gunfire coming from inside the residence. A standoff followed outside the 1400 block of Smithville Road before a man identified as Tommy Clinton Jones, the victim’s 47-year-old son, emerged and was taken into custody. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the death inquiry at the request of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office; by the same day the GBI announced that Tommy Clinton Jones had been arrested and charged with one count of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault and booked into the Lee County Jail. The obituary for Tommy Lee Jones describes him as an Albany-born Lee County resident who had retired from Another Plumbing Company, enjoyed fishing, Lee County and University of Georgia football, teaching his grandsons plumbing, and raising chickens.
The investigation was described as active and was to be turned over to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution once complete. Does anyone have information about the morning of July 4 on Smithville Road or memories of Tommy Lee Jones that could help clarify what happened?
