Charles Ogletree, a 64-year-old Black man of Barnesville, Georgia, was shot and killed at his family’s Johnstonville Road home on January 30, 2024. Deputies arrived shortly after 8:00 a.m. and found him with a gunshot wound; he died at the scene. A later account said a LifeFlight helicopter had been summoned but the flight was canceled after he succumbed, and that a handgun was found in the yard.

The shooting was treated as a family homicide investigation. Deputies took Charles’s son, Charkinta Ogletree, into custody at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in and its preliminary findings alleged that Charkinta shot his father during a dispute. The GBI charged Charkinta with felony murder and aggravated assault and the case was to be forwarded to the Lamar County District Attorney’s Office; those allegations and charges are not a finding of guilt. Earlier arrest records reported for Charkinta included multiple charges over the prior 18 months, but those reports do not establish convictions.

Charles was remembered in his obituary as a Lamar County High School graduate, a U.S. Army veteran, a carpenter and a bass guitarist who performed with local groups and whose family hosted foster children. Is there anyone who knew Charles or witnessed what happened that morning who can share information with investigators?
