Destyn Rashad Alexander was 34 when he was shot in the chest at a Motel 6 on Monroe Drive in Gainesville, Georgia. The shooting occurred on the afternoon of January 19, 2024. Alexander, described as Black/African American, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center but died of his injuries.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect, 47-year-old Corey Maurice Rucker of Gainesville, who was known to Alexander. Police say Rucker fled the scene in Alexander’s burgundy Nissan Murano, triggering a multi-agency search. Working together, the Gainesville Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, FBI, and DeKalb County Police SWAT located Rucker at a motel in DeKalb County. He was arrested there without incident in the early hours of January 20 and taken to the Hall County Jail.
Rucker was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft of a motor vehicle. Does anyone have information about Alexander’s movements in Gainesville or who might have seen the burgundy Nissan Murano around January 19?
