Demario Bates, 33, was shot multiple times outside a home on Fruitwood Trace in South Fulton, Georgia, on August 5, 2023. He was supposed to leave for an out-of-state work trip the next day. His mother, Sonia Bates, remembers a hardworking, smiling man who was a devoted dad to his 6-year-old.

For months there was no arrest. Then on November 21, 2023, South Fulton police and the U.S. Marshals arrested 21-year-old Deangielo Hawthorne. According to the warrant, Hawthorne's mother had been in a relationship with Demario, and she described it as abusive. That day, an argument between them turned physical and moved outside, where she says she saw her son with a gun and tried to stop him.

Hawthorne is charged with murder and held without bond. This one doesn't have easy answers. What do you make of it?
