A quiet Saturday morning in the Dogwood Lakes subdivision of Hampton, Georgia, ended in a rapid burst of violence on July 15, 2023, when neighbor Andre Longmore, 40, went on a shooting rampage that killed four residents. Victims included 66-year-old Shirley Leavitt, her husband Scott Leavitt, 67, and neighbors Stephen Gray Steve Blizzard, 65, and Ronald Jeffers, 66. The shootings occurred within about 10 minutes, leaving the neighborhood shaken.
Authorities identified Longmore as the suspect and launched a large multi-county manhunt across the metro Atlanta area. The search concluded the next day in Jonesboro, roughly 15 miles north of Hampton, when officers confronted Longmore at an apartment complex. He opened fire, and in the ensuing shootout Longmore was killed; a Henry County sheriff’s deputy and two Clayton County officers were wounded and expected to recover.
Longmore’s family reported concerns about his mental health stretching back nearly a decade, including a reported mental breakdown in 2014 and a refusal to seek medical care afterward. The motive for the killings has not been established. If anyone knew Shirley Leavitt or has information about what happened that morning, please share what you remember.
