A domestic disturbance at a home on Shadowbrook Drive in Rome, Georgia, on Saturday, March 4, 2023, ended with 51-year-old Iris Dail Edwards of Woodstock found in the backyard with a single gunshot wound to the chest. Another woman on scene attempted life-saving measures but officials pronounced Edwards dead at the scene. Responding officers were told by 21-year-old Ellis Geoffrey Marrs that he had just shot someone. The firearm was recovered on top of a grill in the backyard with its magazine ejected.
Investigators reported the shooting arose from a domestic altercation; Marrs was said to have been trying to intervene in a dispute involving his father and Edwards, who was his father’s girlfriend. Alcohol was reported to have been a factor. Marrs was taken into custody, initially charged with murder and later also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. His attorney later asserted self-defense, and a judge denied bond, citing flight risk.
