Nakeri Jackson, 26, was one of two people killed in a mass shooting in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood on June 24, 2014. The attack occurred in the early morning hours when gunmen opened fire on a crowd; police were called to reports of gunshots about 2:15 a.m. Jackson was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after. Seven other people were wounded and investigators recovered dozens of shell casings at the scene, describing the incident as a gangland-style assault.
City officials said the shooting prompted a reassessment of strategies against crime and brought increased patrols, including additional officers and a canine unit, but residents continued to express fear and concern about safety and limited police resources. Investigators asked anyone with information about the shootings to come forward; fear and distrust in the community have been cited as obstacles to solving the case.
