On the late afternoon of February 14, 2023, 13-year-old Jaeden Travis was shot and killed on Windward Lane in Norcross, Georgia. Officers found him in the street near his home around 5:40 p.m.; he was taken to a local hospital and died of his injuries. Jaeden’s parents say he had been bullied and threatened by another teenager for months. They say a car carrying other teens pulled up to the Travis home that day, Jaeden went outside, and his father heard gunfire.
The father said Jaeden had taken a BB gun outside and the other teen had a real gun, and he witnessed his son fall in the street. The Gwinnett County Police Department investigated and referred the case to the District Attorney’s Office, which determined the shooting was a justifiable homicide, concluding evidence indicated Jaeden had pulled a weapon first. No murder charges were filed; one teenager, Manuel Ramirez, was charged with tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a minor. Jaeden’s family said they were devastated and believe the event was a setup; they described him as a boy who enjoyed basketball, music, and fishing.
Does anyone have information about what happened that afternoon or about the teens who were involved?
