John O. Staley was a 63-year-old White man found dead inside his Decatur, Illinois, home on July 8, 2024, after officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of N. Monroe Street on a report of a battery. A coroner’s examination determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. Initial scene observations also noted suspected bruising to the face and what appeared to be a separate gunshot wound to the lower body.

Detectives executed a search warrant at a nearby residence on the 1400 block of N. Monroe Street. That work led to the arrest of a 14-year-old boy who was charged with first-degree murder; authorities said the youth was on aftercare through the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice and was taken to the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center. Investigators later arrested a second 14-year-old boy in connection with the killing. The investigation remained active as of the last update in July 2024.
