Jawon E. Brown, 24, of Rantoul, Illinois, was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department in Urbana on May 19, 2024, after being brought in by a private vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting is believed to have occurred in the parking lot of a business in the 1100 block of North Mattis Avenue in Champaign. The Champaign Police Department and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office are investigating, and an autopsy was scheduled for the following week to help determine cause and manner of death.
Brown’s death follows an earlier, unrelated police encounter: on August 8, 2020, a 20-year-old Jawon Brown and another man, Allen Baines, were arrested after a shooting in the 300 block of North Neil Street that involved multiple gunshots and a fleeing vehicle that later crashed; Brown and Baines faced preliminary traffic, resisting and weapons charges in that matter. There have been no reports of suspects or arrests connected to the May 19, 2024, shooting. If anyone has information about the incident in the 1100 block of North Mattis Avenue, please come forward to the Champaign Police Department.
