On April 15, 2024 at 6:48 p.m., officers with the Decatur Police Department responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the 800 block of South Jasper Street in Decatur, Illinois. They found 65-year-old Decatur resident Darrell D. Coon Jr. deceased from a gunshot wound. An autopsy was performed at the McLean County Coroner’s morgue in Bloomington.

Police have called the incident a non-random act of violence and say the investigation is ongoing. Two people have been arrested and charged with First Degree Murder: John E. Inman, 40, and Trimarion D. Howell, 20. Both are being held at the Macon County Jail. No motive or further circumstances have been released beyond the statement that the killing was not random.
