On the evening of February 8, 2024, James Henry Berry, 52, was fatally shot outside a residence in the 200 block of Riverview Avenue in Lockport Township, Illinois. Berry and a 55-year-old man had returned from a grocery trip at about 7 p.m. when an unknown person, later identified as 24-year-old Jaron Nabors Jr., began firing. Witnesses reported five or six shots; both men were found lying near the front door and taken to hospital. Berry died of his injuries; the other man survived surgery but was left paralyzed from the waist down.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office says Nabors was already wanted on a no-bond warrant in an unrelated case and was located by the Fugitive Warrants Unit in Joliet Township the Wednesday after the shooting. He attempted to flee but was taken into custody; a Glock 34 9mm recovered in his hoodie was later confirmed to be the weapon used. Initial statements by Nabors about the gun were false. The shooting has been described as an apparent ambush; no motive or connection between Nabors and the victims is detailed.
Does anyone have information about Berry, the 55-year-old victim, or what might have led to this ambush?
