On the evening of August 28, 2023, 30-year-old Travon Mackie of Chicago was driving a Toyota Camry on the Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) near Dolton Road in Dolton, Illinois when troopers responded to a reported multi-vehicle crash about 7:27 p.m. At the scene Mackie’s Camry and an Audi A4 were crashed against the concrete median; Mackie was inside his car with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators later determined the wreck was the result of shots fired from the Audi into Mackie’s Camry while the two vehicles were driving side-by-side. The Audi was found abandoned and Mackie was unarmed; no weapon was recovered in his car. Two days after the shooting Mackie died of his injuries.
State police led the investigation and, with assistance from federal authorities, identified and arrested Calvin Woods of Matteson. Woods was charged in connection with the shooting, later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Anyone who knew Travon Mackie or has information about the incident is asked to come forward.
