Mieshon Harvey, 21, of Waukegan, Illinois, was shot and killed on May 28, 2023, after trying to break up a fight outside the Bowlero bowling alley at 631 Lakehurst Road. The shooting happened in the early morning around 1:09 a.m.; Harvey was taken to Vista Medical Center East and pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to the Lake County coroner.
Harvey intervened and argued with 24-year-old Josiah Mars of Zion. During that exchange, 32-year-old Derrick Wells of Zion handed Mars a handgun, which Mars used to shoot Harvey in the chest. Both men fled but were later arrested. Mars was found with a semi-automatic handgun that investigators say matched the caliber used in Harvey’s killing and is believed to have been used in a separate shooting that same morning in Zion, where Harvey’s 21-year-old cousin was wounded in the neck.
Mars and Wells face multiple murder and firearm-related charges and were held on multimillion-dollar bonds. Harvey’s family describe him as energetic and kind and have created a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
Did anyone see or hear anything that night at Bowlero or in the surrounding area that could help clarify what happened?
