Mark Asber, 22, of Niles, Illinois, was shot and killed outside the Miraj nightclub at 8801 North Milwaukee Avenue in Niles in the early hours of Sunday, April 23, 2023. He was found in the parking lot around 1 a.m. with at least one gunshot wound; police began lifesaving measures and transported him to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead. One bullet penetrated his chest and proved fatal.
The suspect is 25-year-old Alan Kettina of Northbrook, an acquaintance of Asber and a former Cook County sheriff’s department correctional officer who was de-deputized after the incident. Investigators say Kettina arrived at Miraj the night of the shooting, left and later returned, took Asber for a drive in his Jeep, parked in an alley behind the club, and fired four shots from a Glock 17 as Asber walked away. Kettina admitted to the shooting, remained at the scene and attempted CPR; he told police he believed shooting Asber was wrong because Asber’s back was turned, calling him an easy target. Kettina was charged with first-degree murder; bail was set at $400,000. Family and neighbors gathered at the Assyrian National Council to mourn, and officials described the incident as isolated.
If anyone knew Mark Asber, his movements that night, or has information about the events behind this shooting, please share what is known.
