Sterling D. Harrell, 29, of Granite City died after a vehicle crash and gunshot injuries connected to a Madison, Illinois, incident on February 10, 2023. Police found the single-vehicle crash at Washington Avenue and 10th Street at about 5:43 p.m.; the car had struck a tree at high speed. Harrell had a gunshot wound to the head and crash injuries and was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital, where he died on Sunday, February 12.

A second male passenger was injured and taken to a local hospital in stable condition; authorities have not released his name. Investigators from the Madison Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division, and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services Command examined the scene. Evidence indicated gunshots were fired either before or after the collision, and possible persons of interest were identified and sought for questioning.
