Rachel Ann Havrick, 46, was shot to death in her South Bend, Indiana, home on the night of January 2, 2023. Police were called to her Ashland Avenue residence shortly before 11:30 p.m.; officers found her suffering multiple gunshot wounds and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two masked men had entered the home that evening and demanded she open a safe containing several weapons. When she could not open the safe, one intruder pistol-whipped her and then fatally shot her. Her juvenile son and daughter were in the home during the attack.

Within weeks the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit identified and arrested three people in connection with the killing: 25-year-old Ddrea Bostic, 20-year-old Devon Briggs, and 30-year-old Erica Elie. Investigators alleged Bostic, who was dating Havrick’s adult daughter, had been at the house earlier and knew about the safe; Elie allegedly drove Bostic and Briggs to the residence while Bostic and Briggs entered to steal the firearms. Bostic and Briggs were charged with murder, felony murder, burglary, and robbery; Elie was charged with assisting a criminal.
