On the evening of December 5, 2023, gunfire was reported near 28 Lexington Street and Green Street in Brockton. Police arrived around 6:17 p.m. and found 35-year-old Marvin Hill, a Black / African American man, with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and then airlifted to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined the shooting did not appear to be random and identified a person of interest quickly. On December 8 an arrest warrant was sought for a suspect, and on December 20 Massachusetts State Police located and arrested 33-year-old Donta Hood in Assonet. Hood was arraigned in Brockton District Court on charges including murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a weapon within 500 feet of a building, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition; he pleaded not guilty and was held without bail. A Plymouth County grand jury later indicted Hood on murder and firearm-related counts and described him as an armed career criminal.
A second person, 34-year-old Leon Shelby, was indicted on one count of being an accessory after the fact to murder and an arrest warrant was issued for him. If anyone has information about Marvin Hill, his movements that evening, or Shelby’s whereabouts, please share what is known with investigators.
