Amani Smith was 14 when he was fatally shot one afternoon near Latonia Elementary School in Covington, Kentucky. A student at Homes Middle School, he was with his girlfriend at the bus stop when gunfire struck; his girlfriend was injured. Amani was taken to UC Medical Center and later died of his wounds.

Family accounts say the shooting followed a school conflict a few weeks earlier that involved Amani’s older brother. Parents say the dispute turned into repeated harassment by phone and text, and that they reported concerns to the school and board of education.

Covington police arrested a 17-year-old male and charged him with murder; his name was not released because of his age. Amani’s parents say the tragedy could have been prevented and hold multiple parties responsible.
