An 18-year-old man, Melvin McClinton Jr., was shot and killed in Kenner, Louisiana, on the afternoon of February 5, 2024. The shooting occurred in the 1600 block of 42nd Street; two people drove McClinton to Ochsner Kenner hospital around 12:50 p.m., but he died from his injuries. Police described the two occupants as uncooperative and said they believed McClinton had been targeted rather than the victim of a random attack.

Authorities executed a search warrant the next day at a Newport Place residence and arrested 19-year-old Jarrone Crimmins, who was initially booked on a first-degree murder charge. The case later moved through the courts and was indicted on second-degree murder by a Jefferson Parish grand jury in June 2024; the matter remains pending.

The family suffered further tragedy later in February when Melvin McClinton Sr., who relatives said had been struggling after his son’s death, fatally shot his 3-year-old son, Carmelo McClinton, during a domestic dispute on February 28 and then shot himself; the father later died on March 1. Anyone with information on the February 5 fatal shooting of Melvin McClinton Jr. is asked to contact Kenner Police or Crimestoppers.
