A 19-month-old girl, Kaci Giselle Cyprian, was killed during a shootout at a residence on South General Marshall Street in Lafayette, Louisiana, on August 5, 2023. Lafayette police officers were on scene responding to a domestic disturbance when gunfire erupted; the child was struck in the crossfire and died. Kaci’s four-year-old brother was wounded in the arm, and a great-aunt was also injured. Two Lafayette police officers sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.
Authorities identified the suspect as Kaci’s uncle, John Nicholas, who was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder for the child’s death, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, domestic abuse battery, child endangerment, and false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon. The trial has been rescheduled and is expected to take place in 2026. Kaci’s parents have filed lawsuits against the Lafayette Police Department and the City of Lafayette alleging negligent and excessive force by officers and have sought release of body camera footage. Kaci’s mother has publicly stated she believes her son is innocent.
Did anyone in Lafayette see or hear anything that night that might help clarify what happened inside the house?
