Fifteen-year-old Brianna Rachelle Higgins was shot and killed on the evening of January 19, 2024. A sophomore at Lawrence High School, her family described her as a beautiful, bright soul who lit up any room. Police say two acquaintances woke Brianna at her home in Lawrence and persuaded her to go out with them that night.

At about 10:51 p.m. the Olathe Medical Center contacted police after a juvenile female with a gunshot wound was brought to the hospital; hospital staff and officers assisted in bringing her inside, but Brianna was pronounced deceased. Investigators determined the shooting occurred at the Clarion Park Apartments in the 16900 block of West 127th Street in Olathe. Family members question why the people who transported Brianna to the hospital did not call emergency services immediately.

Police identified and contacted all occupants of the car that brought Brianna to the hospital. On January 29 a 17-year-old male from Kansas City, Missouri, Davon Washington, was taken into custody and charged with reckless second-degree murder and juvenile possession of a firearm; the complaint alleges he unintentionally but recklessly shot Brianna. Sentencing was scheduled for June 28, 2024.
