A confrontation outside the Horseshoe Bar in Hays, Kansas, on June 25, 2023, ended with 63-year-old Larry Braun shot in the neck and later dying at Hays Medical Center. The shooting occurred around 1:47 a.m. in the 1000 block of East Eighth Street; emergency responders found Braun on the ground and began life-saving measures before transporting him to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police arrested 40-year-old Keith A. Ostrom of Hays at the scene and initially booked him on a charge of second-degree murder. Investigators collected witness statements that conflicted on key points. Ostrom at one point told authorities he believed Braun had a knife, but the initial police report said Ostrom did not mention a knife at the scene, leaving that detail unresolved.
