Kaleb Christian Lane was 13 when he died from gunshot injuries sustained on March 16, 2023, in the 1300 block of Southwest Garfield Avenue in Topeka. An eighth grader at Eisenhower Middle School, Kaleb was remembered for an infectious laugh, a bright smile and a love of restoring and reselling shoes, fishing, riding dirt bikes, shooting basketball, and cooking with his older siblings.
Police found Kaleb with life-threatening injuries at the scene and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities described the incident as an accidental shooting. A 14-year-old was arrested after the investigation; the juvenile was charged with reckless second-degree murder and criminal use of a weapon and was held at the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections.
