A confrontation in Pittsburg, Kansas, on the afternoon of February 17, 2023, left 51-year-old David Duane Mays dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers responded to a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. near 1023 N. Main Street and found Mays in the roadway; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office joined the homicide inquiry.

Investigators identified two suspects. Collin Pal Gebford, 43, was arrested at the scene and booked into Crawford County Jail on charges that included attempted premeditated first-degree murder and felony murder. The next day authorities arrested 32-year-old Travis Blake Conness of Neosho, Missouri, on similar charges; he was also booked into the county jail. An autopsy for Mays was scheduled for February 21, 2023.
