Eight-year-old Amir Demarion Harden was fatally shot after intervening to protect his mother during a domestic altercation in Burnsville, Minnesota. On June 5, 2024, according to his mother Cherish Edwards, Amir’s father, Danair Harden, aimed a firearm at her with the intent to kill. Amir tried to wrestle the gun away and, despite his mother’s pleas to go to safety, said he would not leave her. During the struggle he was shot in the head and neck. Both Amir and his father were found critically injured at the family’s Echo Park Court home and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center; Amir died of complications from his injuries on June 9 and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Amir was a second grader at Echo Park Elementary, remembered for his infectious smile and protective nature toward his siblings. Four siblings were present and witnessed the shooting. Earlier the same day, Danair Harden had been released on $4,000 bail after charges from a May 30 domestic assault; prosecutors had sought higher bail and a no-contact order. Hours after his release he allegedly violated the court’s order, leading to the confrontation. Danair Harden remained hospitalized in critical condition and authorities said criminal charges would be considered if he survived. If anyone knew Amir, the family, or has information about the incident, please share what is known.
