Officer Jacob James Derbin, 23, was killed on May 11, 2024, while responding to a disturbance call at a home on East 211th Street in Euclid, Ohio. A nine-month member of the Euclid Police Department and a recent graduate of the Kent State University Police Academy, Derbin was ambushed by a gunman just before 10 p.m. and later died at a local hospital despite emergency treatment.

Authorities identified the shooter as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, who was wanted for a probation violation and described as armed and extremely dangerous. A manhunt ended the next day, May 12, when Vaughn was found dead after a standoff at a Shaker Heights apartment complex; the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner determined his wound was a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

Derbin had served one tour of duty in Kuwait with the U.S. Army National Guard and was engaged to be married in July 2024. The killing has deeply affected the Euclid community and law enforcement across Ohio, drawing public statements of condolence and calls for unity from state and local officials. Does anyone have information about Officer Derbin’s last call or the disturbance on East 211th Street?
