On Wednesday, May 1, 2024, deputies responding to a call at 7310 E. State Route 29, between Urbana and Mechanicsburg, Ohio, found two adult men dead inside a residence. The victims were identified as Lundy R. Travis, 68, and Wayne F. Smoot, 74, who had been permitted to live in the home by the property owner. Preliminary findings from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office indicate both men died of gunshot wounds; their bodies were sent for post-mortem examination to determine exact cause and manner.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office are conducting the investigation. Detectives and agents collected evidence and conducted interviews at the scene; authorities have said there is no ongoing threat to the community. No arrests or suspects have been publicly identified. Lundy Pete R. Travis Jr. was born August 24, 1955, in Springfield, Ohio.
