On March 25, 2024, 61-year-old Uber driver Lo-Letha M. Hall of Columbus was fatally shot at a residence in South Charleston, Ohio. The shooting followed a complex scam in which callers pretending to be court officers told 81-year-old William Brock that a family member was jailed and demanded a bond; the callers then escalated to ransom threats and used the Uber app to send Hall to Brock’s home to pick up a package. Brock confronted Hall, seized her cellphone and blocked her exit. When Hall tried to flee, Brock shot her once; after a struggle in which Brock suffered a head injury, he allegedly shot Hall two more times. Brock called 911 to report he had shot someone on his property whom he believed was trying to rob him.

Hall was taken to Miami Valley Hospital and died during surgery. Brock was arrested and charged with murder, held on $200,000 bond which he posted, and released from Clark County Jail. On April 15, 2024, a grand jury indicted him on three counts of murder, one count of felonious assault and one count of kidnapping. Investigators say Hall was not connected to the scam and posed no threat to Brock. Authorities are searching for the people who made the fraudulent calls.
