Nicholas Andrew Tubbs, 21, of Grafton, Ohio, was shot in the parking lot of the Walmart on Chestnut Commons in Elyria on the afternoon of Thursday, November 2, 2023. A 911 call about a shooting came in at about 4:54 p.m.; officers and paramedics found Nicholas with gunshot injuries and he was taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. He died from those injuries early the next morning, November 3, 2023.
Authorities described the shooting as an isolated incident and the Elyria Police Department obtained an arrest warrant quickly. On November 3 officers arrested 19-year-old Roosevelt Benton of Oberlin; he was arraigned that day on felonious assault and prosecutors added a murder charge on November 6. A judge set bond at $1 million and the case was pending in the court system as of November 2023.
Nicholas was described by family as a beloved son, brother, grandson, and uncle who enjoyed his job in the heating and cooling field, lifting weights, the gym, and riding, and who shared his life with his girlfriend Hailey Keller. Anyone with information about the shooting or who saw activity in the Walmart parking lot that afternoon is asked to come forward.
