Within 24 hours investigators identified a prime suspect, 25-year-old son Mohamed Lamin Kandeh, and an arrest warrant was issued. He was stopped by Delaware officers with help from the Ohio State Highway Patrol at about 11:30 a.m. on September 4 on Maloney Road near McCurdy Road and taken into custody without incident. Court records noted prior incidents involving erratic and dangerous behavior, including a 2022 arrest for aggravated menacing and domestic violence and a 2020 matter involving the father of an ex-girlfriend.

A preliminary hearing was set for September 14 and a bond hearing for September 8.
