James Chapman, 34, was fatally shot outside his Lener Avenue SW residence in Warren, Ohio, on April 2, 2023. Court testimony describes an early morning disturbance in which 29-year-old Kashaun Robin Williams shouted outside using Chapman’s nickname Jay Bay. When Chapman stepped outside, Williams shot him twice in the back, killing him.
Chapman’s live-in girlfriend, Martina Moore, was beaten with a firearm and shot three times before Williams tried to force her into a vehicle. Moore wrestled the gun away during the struggle and survived. Williams fled, was later found hiding in a wooded area, resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer while being taken into custody.
Williams was indicted on nine counts including two counts of aggravated murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated burglary, weapons under disability and assault on a peace officer; the indictment included death penalty specifications and referenced prior felonious assault convictions in 2017 and 2019. At trial a jury found Williams guilty on all counts and he received life without parole plus additional years. Does anyone have information about Chapman’s life in Warren or witnessed the events that morning?
