On the evening of June 20, 2024, in a Lacey, Washington home, 24-year-old Julia Maupin and 26-year-old Brandon Rudlaff were found fatally shot. The Thurston County Coroner determined Julia died of a gunshot wound to the head; her unborn baby was also declared deceased as a result of the maternal death. Rudlaff died of multiple gunshot wounds. Both deaths were ruled homicides.
Julia lived in the residence with her husband, 21-year-old John Robert Maupin, her mother and her mother’s partner. Rudlaff, described as Julia’s boyfriend and an active-duty soldier at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, also lived there and shared a room with Julia. That evening Julia’s mother overheard an argument between Julia and John, then later heard gunshots and found Julia and Rudlaff with fatal head wounds. Her partner saw John Maupin walking down the stairs with a gun before he fled.
After the shooting John Maupin allegedly threatened the mother’s partner with a gun, drove away, and was pursued by an Olympia Police officer at speeds over 110 mph. He abandoned his car in the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, fled on foot, and was arrested there in the early hours of June 21. He was booked into Thurston County Jail on charges including two counts of second-degree murder, second-degree domestic violence assault, and eluding police; a judge ordered him held without bail. Anyone with information about Julia, Brandon, or the events that night is asked to share what they know.
