On May 27, 2024, a vehicle collision in Sunnyside, Washington, between a car driven by 21-year-old Lucio Moses Castaneda and a car driven by 20-year-old Marques Cardenas escalated into a fatal shooting. After the collision, Cardenas allegedly displayed gang signs and drove away; Castaneda pursued him for about five blocks and tried to pull up alongside. At that point Cardenas reportedly fired six shots into Castaneda’s vehicle, fatally wounding him. A passenger in Castaneda’s car was not injured.
Cardenas fled, crashed shortly afterward, and attempted to run but was quickly taken into custody with help from witnesses. He was identified as a member of the Norteño gang and appeared in Yakima County Superior Court on charges including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm, with bail set at $750,000. The Yakima County Coroner confirmed Castaneda’s identity following autopsy. If anyone witnessed the crash, the pursuit, or the shooting, please share what was seen.
