On the evening of Friday, February 16, 2024, Maurice Xavier Hernandez, 17, and his 13-year-old brother Isaak Hernandez were fatally shot while waiting in a vehicle in the 1500 block of East Edison Avenue in Sunnyside. The brothers had accompanied their mother to a nearby store; while she was inside, one or more assailants opened fire, striking both boys multiple times. Responding officers found both juveniles and they were pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy confirmed both died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities say they suspect more than one shooter and have not released a motive, though investigators have not ruled out gang- or drug-related reasons. A 13-year-old male was briefly taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and accomplice to first-degree murder but was released after the prosecutor declined to file charges pending more information. No other arrests have been announced and the investigation remains active.
