On October 3, 2023, deputies answered a report of a gunshot injury at a residence just outside Poulsbo city limits and found 38-year-old Brandon Egeler of Bremerton unresponsive. Deputies attempted life-saving measures until medics arrived, but Egeler died at the scene. The Kitsap County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide from a single gunshot wound to the neck.

Investigators identified two suspects, 29-year-old Caleb R. Sloan and 26-year-old Aksel J. Strom, and obtained felony warrants charging both with second-degree murder and first-degree burglary. Authorities described the men as known to the victim and believed they were armed; they also suspected the suspects were receiving assistance while avoiding capture.

Strom was arrested on October 27, 2023, after vehicle pursuits in Pacific County. Sloan was arrested on December 9, 2023, following a chase that began after he was spotted in a stolen vehicle. Both were booked into the Kitsap County Jail; Sloan faced additional charges for possession of a stolen vehicle and attempting to elude. Law enforcement also sought Breanna Hagen for questioning and arrested another person for rendering criminal assistance.
