On the evening of April 22, 2023, Shawn Jemtegaard, a 42-year-old White man from Lacey, Washington, was shot in a parking lot in the 2500 block of Marvin Road Northeast in the Hawks Prairie area and later died after emergency surgery. Police were dispatched shortly before 6:12 p.m. after reports of a dispute and a man with a gunshot wound. Jemtegaard was found with a dime-sized gunshot wound to his torso; a 13-year-old son in the passenger seat witnessed the shooting and a bystander applied pressure to the wound.

Officers arrested 48-year-old Aaron Patrick Costello at the scene; he told police the pistol, described as a .380 caliber, was on a vehicle floorboard and said he acted in self-defense after being pushed. Witnesses and Costello’s manager described a preceding verbal and physical altercation and a traffic dispute. Costello was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder and held on high bail while the autopsy was pending.
