Kayden Michael Cook was 24 when he was killed in Duncan, Oklahoma, on the evening of July 19, 2024. An altercation at the Magnolia Manor Apartments on Country Club Road ended when a single gunshot struck him in the chest; he was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:44 p.m.

Witnesses at the complex identified Jesse Wayne James Keenan as the shooter. Keenan was detained, waived his Miranda rights and told investigators a fight had preceded the shooting and that he fled the scene, later discarding a handgun near some bushes. Authorities recovered the weapon and found its serial number had been scratched off.

Keenen was charged in federal court with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter because both men had tribal affiliations and the incident occurred within the Chickasaw Nation’s boundaries. Court filings say an argument between Keenan and his girlfriend happened before he arrived at the apartment complex. Keenan later pleaded guilty to the charges.
