Atem Mathiang, 19, traveled from Michigan to Oshkosh, Wisconsin to visit cousins and aunts in summer 2024. His visit ended in tragedy on the night of July 2, when he was shot multiple times on Wisconsin Street in what authorities described as an unprovoked attack. His family learned of his death after his aunt returned home from work after 1 a.m.
Police quickly identified a person of interest and within three hours detained an 18-year-old from Fond du Lac, Daniel Trevon Wilson. The criminal complaint says Wilson was walking with his girlfriend and another person when Mathiang approached and allegedly asked if they wanted to buy drugs. After they declined, Mathiang and Wilson continued to speak. Wilson later told his girlfriend he thought Mathiang reached for a weapon in his waistband though he said he never actually saw a gun. The only firearm recovered at the scene belonged to Wilson.
Wilson has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide. The autopsy found five gunshot wounds to Mathiang and investigators recovered six shell casings. A judge set Wilson’s bond at $1 million and he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 25. Does anyone have information about Atem’s last hours or witnessed the shooting on Wisconsin Street?
