Ahsan Payton was six years old when he was struck by a stray bullet during a Fourth of July block party on Akron Street in Temple Hills, Maryland. The shooting began as a dispute between two people and escalated into gunfire; Ahsan was hit on July 4, 2024, taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and died there on July 6, 2024. Two adults suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the same incident.
Authorities identified Rakeem Gilgeours as a suspect after witnesses reported seeing him fall to the ground and then fire a handgun into the crowd. Gilgeours had a prior conviction for assault with a dangerous weapon. He left the country after the shooting and was later apprehended in Guyana and returned to the United States to face charges.
Did anyone at the block party or in the Akron Street neighborhood see what happened that day or recognize the people involved?
